Pet Peeves (GBE2-WK35)

GBE2 WK 35 : Pet Peeves
The meaning of  "pet peeves" vary depending on who is doing the defining. One might say that it is a minor annoyance, and another that it is a major annoyance. The one thing most agree on that it is something that "annoys" the person experiencing it. Rather than figuring out which type of annoyance is being considered here, let me just say I have a basket full of both, minor, and major pet peeves.

Let's just cut to the core of this bitter sweet fruit, shall we? How about a brief list, that will make this an easier task (and less boring for you ;-)

Minor Pet Peeves
  •  Leaving the seat up
  • Cross contamination of food (crumbs in the butter, mayo, jelly, etc…)
  • Touching anything while cooking without washing your hands
  •  Not picking up after yourself (provided it affects me at all ;-)
  •  People who blare their music near me, so that I cannot enjoy my own space

Major Pet Peeves
  • Hypocrites with boisterous opinions
  • People who judge another without any understanding of their situation
  • Hearing the combination "You should…" in any conversation.. serves no purpose other than to inflict a guilt based reaction from the person it is said to.
  • Sheeple, yep, that's probably my biggest peeve… people who follow others just because it looks like the thing to do. I like people to think! Even if they have a completely different view from mine. I like diversity, especially in thinkers.
See, less boring ;-)

  1. Excellent lists! I hadn't thought about the crumbs on the butter thing, but yep, that bugs me, too.

    1. After reading your lists, I know I have not prepared the unknowing ones... but those who recognize me as kindred, will have no trouble filling in the blanks :-)

  2. Strangely enough, I agree withall of them, quite similar in thinking! Great selection!

  3. Nothing boring here! I can relate to all of these. I've trained my husband well on the first one. ;)

  4. All good and valid peeves. I believe I share all of them. Why do people do these things, anyway>>>>>>??????????????

  5. I would have to move your 3rd minor peeve into major leagues because I have OCD about handwashing. LOL... Otherwise, I agree with your lists.

    1. I am generally a germ freak. So anything to do with transfer of germs from one person to another gets me a little heebie jeebie. :-)

  6. On behalf of men everywhere please accept my apologies for leaving the seat the toilet seat up, and that crumb inside the mayo jar. We simply are showing our disbelief that either of these things can compare with the trust we placed in Eve when she said " you gonna listen to God or Me, eat the apple!" :) Oh, and when we leave our socks on the floor (5 feet from the hamper) it really means "I love you so much, you just knock my socks off! and if I throw them in the hamper, how will you ever know that!"
I just hope this helps soften some of those peeves and understand us men a little more! :) :)

  7. I am with you on the last one. I have always instilled that to my kids too. I'd rather hear them reason out or defend themselves ,even argue with them instead of receiving blind obedience.

    1. I love to hear a parent (or parents) say that! If they understand that they are not required to blindly obey, they will learn to think. It takes more work when they are young, but when you let them out into the world, they are prepared!

  8. You should, doesn't bother me, because, I'm not going to and if that bugs you, then I'm even happier. I know, perverse.
But Sheeple? Love it. I don't like crowds and I never seek out large groups, and who am I kidding, I just don't get popularity. :)

    1. Kelly,

You make me laugh. I just shut people off in my head after I hear "You should..." anything that follows does not exist for me.

As for sheeple, well the tribal mentality of many places, people, and faces has been a part of cultural ignorance for as long as I can trace it back. I think that writers are used to some "alone" time, and those that do it regularly are used to thinking outside the box. Maybe it's part of why my love for words flourishes, along with my disdain for autobot humans. I like thinkers... yep, writers think... makes sense to me! :-)

  9. I might not even write this week as you all are nailing mine. I agree with all of these. My husband is also trained on the seat, although my son, even at 31, has not quite gotten it.

Sheeple, just today I was commenting that all the students from a local college were dressed exactly the same, UGG boots, jeans, North Face jackets, they might as well have a uniform. Thanks for a good read.

    1. Thank you Pam,

A uniform indeed, one that they choose from the trendiest of those they look up to! ;-) In the long run, that part really doesn't matter much, what's inside them will.

And I do hope you will write one of your own, it can be a bit cathartic :-)

  10. Ah, Sheeple... Aren't they wonderful? The best are the ones who become Goth/Emo/Indie/insert current fad here to assert their individuality... I love Sheeple for their amusement value *grin* Nice, concise post.

    1. You are one up on me then, they no longer amuse me. They move from disdain to annoyance and back again. Not as much so with the sheeple mindset for fashion, but the picking up of a cause, without their own thought behind it.

      Thank you for peekin' in!

  12. This was fun to read. :)

    1) Leaving the seat up - grounds for filing divorce in the country where I live. ;)
    2) Cross contamination of food - considered extremely rude behaviour where I llive; akin to picking your nose or chewing with your mouth open.
    3) Touching anything while cooking without washing your hands - has gone before court as "assault with a deadly weapon" where I live.
    4) Not picking up after yourself - was considered extreme sociopathic messy behaviour by my last employer, and cause to get professional counselling.
    5) People who blare their music near me, so that I cannot enjoy my own space - has been the major source of neighbour wars that end in court with charges of mutual assault with a deadly weapon where I live.
    6) Hypocrites with boisterous opinions - in this country they get their own T.V. show. The biggest hypocrite I know hosts Germany's search for the Next Teen Idol.
    7) People who judge another without any understanding of their situation - I get into a philosophical bind on this one. How much "understanding of their situation" is required before you judge a man committed of multiple child molestation?
    8) Hearing the combination "You should…" in any conversation - Really? Doesn't it depend on how you use it? Like in the sentence: "You should think about what you want in this situation!" Does that evoke guilt?
    9) Sheeple - Like in "herd conformity"? It's N° 5 on the list of the 9 Deadly Satanic Sins, because it's considered a form of psychological slavery. The death of any ant-like colony structure is when people start to think for themselves. It makes controlling organization redundant.

    1. What a delightful response! You made me laugh hard, and out loud!

The clause you added to #7 is legit, I would not tolerate that... nope, not even a little bit, and could not "understand" it in any real fashion. So, see, by sharing your thoughts, you have altered mine (slightly heh).

#8 however, is as it stands. I have found no real reason to use the term (though on occasion I still do, because of old habits) if time is taken to consider the wording in another manner. So even the "You should think about what you want in this situation!" is a guilt evoking statement, that could be better put as "What do you think you want in this situation?" uh huh... yep, that one I am keeping (and working on at the same time LOL).

      Thanks for a great response!

  13. A great list! Yeah, 'shoulds' are terrible and I find that the worst offender when it comes to giving them to me is me.

    1. Michael, that is not as uncommon as it might seem. Most people do that to themselves far more than others do to/at them. That realization was what started me off on my peeve alert ;-)

  14. I love the "sheeple," too. In fact I go a little overboard: I pride myself on not following any trends, not reading best sellers, etc. I admit I'm kind of a snob about anything that's "popular." I like to make up my own mind about what I read, watch, listen to, wear, and so forth.

    1. Elaine, I might pick a book up off the bestseller list, but it will be because it looks interesting to me, not because everyone else likes it. Though I do tend to avoid movies if the critics say they are wonderful, because most of the time, those are the movies I dislike most. Odd how that kind of thing happens.

  15. My kids are really bad to get the peanut butter in the jelly and vice versa!

As for sheeple, my niece kills me in this area. She's, for the most part, a very self confident young lady that doesn't care what anyone thinks but she's bad to fall into following some things with some people. It's especially annoying when she tries to sheeple something that goes against everything she's ever been taught!

  18. This is a great list of peeves.. I especially liked how you categorized into levels. I think in the moment of 'peeveing' I don't distinguish, and tend allow the rant in my chest either blow out of swallow it before it festers.

My favorite of your peeves is your last one, this is a wonder to me as well as a peeve. If you figure this out or have some insight, do share..

    1. Thank you Brenda,

Focusing on the things I don't like/enjoy goes a bit against my grain, but it was a good exercise none-the-less!

I think the sheeple mentality comes down to people wanting to belong: to a group, a tribe, an organization, a club, etc... In an odd way it seems to be a type of belonging that makes some feel better about who and what they are. That's not to say that all people who belong to some kind of group or club are sheeple, but it is that underlying current of needing it, rather than wanting it that seems to be one of the motivators.

That's my tidbit of insight for this round... no doubt it will morph with more information ;-)

      Thanks for peeking in!
