The BFF 160 challenge is to write a story in under 300 words which includes a character, conflict, and resolution. Let's get started!
Short Story (Under 300 Words) |
Poolside
Hot sun
poured out on the concrete surrounding the pool. She sat in a chair a few feet
from the water's edge. Anxiety rushed up through her body, it was the third day
of her vacation and she had not yet braved the water. She wanted to swim, but
had not since her little brother drowned when she was just a child.
A splash
jarred her from her thoughts. A small body was flailing in the water. No one
noticed, but her. Fear mingled with memories. Visions flashed between the lake,
her little brother, and the pool. She was terrified, frozen both in the past
and present. Her lead-like body was an anchor to the chair. There was no time
to contemplate.
She jumped
in.
Water went
over her head, threatening to steal her breath. Her arms reached out to the
little girl, and pulled her close. She lifted the child's face above the water
and swam to the edge. Hot concrete greeted her bare feet. She wrapped a towel
around the small girl, and herself.
Whatever
fear had strangled her, it was not as great as her desire to save the child
that now snuggled up to her poolside.
